The Beadhead WD‑40 is a proven nymph pattern favored by trout anglers, originally developed by Mark Engler in the early 1980s. The addition of a beadhead came later, giving the fly extra weight and helping it reach feeding fish more quickly.
Tied with a slim, tapered body of synthetic fibers such as polypropylene or Antron yarn, the pattern often includes fine wire ribbing for durability and a segmented look. The small bead at the head enhances sink rate without adding bulk. Typically tied in natural shades—black, brown, chartreuse, gray, olive, red, and tan—the Beadhead WD‑40 effectively imitates a range of small aquatic insects, making it a reliable choice in both rivers and stillwaters.
